Discovery Bay Hong Kong
Discovery Bay Hong Kong lies on the north eastern end of Lantau Island. Covering an area of approximately 650 hectares, it is informally referred to as Disco Bay or simply DB by residents and local expats. Discovery Bay rentals are a popluar choice among expats due to the convenient lifestyle and small town feel of the community.
The Discovery Bay property development was first conceived in the 70s as a holiday resort. After a troubled start, construction of the property development began in earnest as a residential community on the site of what was Tai Pak Bay and Yi Pak Bay.
Discovery Bay apartments come mainly as high rise towers, although there are some low rise villas as well as condominium style houses. Another popular choice for expats living in DB is the option of living at the Discovery Bay Marina on a liveaboard boat.
The Discovery Bay Marina provides full facilities for boat owners to live aboard their boats or yachts. The marina will accept all kind of private boats and yachts, but a very popular choice is to live aboard a purpose built Junk. This is not to be confused with the old style Chinese junk, as these liveaboard boats are designed to be a comfortable home, with lots of living space and all the amenities of a large apartment. The Discovery Bay Marina is a typhoon shelter so boats do not have to be moved if a typhoon is expected to hit Hong Kong.
Over the years there has been 13 phases developed, including all the infrastructure required for a community of up to 25,000 residents. Discovery Bay and most of its infrastructure, services, & clubs have been built and are owned and operated by the Hong Kong Resort Company Limited (known as HKR), which is joint owned by HKR International Ltd & CITIC Pacific.
As private vehicles are not permitted, life in Discovery Bay tends to run at a relaxed pace with people getting around inside the property development via golf buggies and minibuses. The plaza, which lies at the centre of DB, just up from the ferry pier, has recently been remodeled adding more shops and quality restaurants for both residents and visitors to enjoy.
For Hong Kong expats, life in Discovery Bay is one of convenience and ease with most everything an expat needs close at hand. There are schools, grocery stores restaurants, fitness clubs, golf clubs, pools, and many activities to join.
Discovery Bay schools cater almost exclusively to DB residents, but space is limited. At the time of writing the schools are Sunshine House (kindergarten), Discovery Mind Kindergarten, SKH Wei Lun Primary School, Discovery Bay International School, and the soon to be opened Discovery College.
Transport within the Discovery Bay property development is on foot, bicycle, golf cart, minibus or bus. Leaving Discovery Bay is via a 25 minute ferry ride to the Central ferry pier which runs every 15-90 minutes depending on the time of day. There are also regular buses between Discovery Bay and Tung Chung MTR, Sunny Bay MTR, and the Hong Kong International Airport.
Things to do in DB:
Lantau Boat Club
Based at the end of Discovery Bay beach, Lantau Boat Club caters for non-powered water-based activities, including catamarans and dinghies; canoes and windsurfers. Based on the gently sloping sandy beach, it is an ideal location for sailing in the warm waters of Hong Kong.
